Lots of Family Visitors!!

GG (Grandma Grubbs) was able to spend two nights with us and help Kristi out all day.


Markus not only helped take care of the baby but worked hard mowing our lawn and making a trek to Baby's R Us. Well worth stacking up on some hot pockets if he keeps coming by. With him and Matt now hunkered down in Raleigh, Kristi has them on speed dial.


Robin and Tom popped in for a visit on Saturday too!!

11 Diaper Changes?

11 Diaper Changes in one day....Are you kidding me? We spent a lazy Saturday with Sydney who slept much of the day after being up for much of the night. She apparently is still a bit jet-lagged and hasn't gotten the memo that she needs to get on Kristi's schedule ASAP.







Jill and Jon sent down a fruit arrangement which was subsequently devoured...


We also had Megan, Sam and Jack stop by to meet Sydney. Jack liked playing with his trains while Syd napped by his side, though he was a little too shy to tickle Syd's feet.

So all throughout her pregnancy and right through labor..Kristi could always tell when Sydney had the hiccups, so it was no surprise to see her with some hiccups once we got home.

Bye Bye Hospital...hello Casa de Komo

So we were expecting to be checked out and be home by noon, but the bureaucratic red tape kept us at the hospital until about 2:15...when we finally made it out of there. Thank goodness...no more hospital food!! First step, get Syd in the car seat. Now Kristi made sure to have the carseat installation checked by the fire department, so with that in mind all we had to do was strap her in, right? Well it was way too tight and with a line of traffic waiting behind us on the pick-up circle, it seemed like an hour before we finally got it right. With that...we were on the road home...and just in time. The rain from Hurricane Hanna started up just as we were leaving, and really didn't stop much all night.

Kristi's parents came down again and helped us get settled back into our place. They helped with some food shopping and keeping Kristi entertained while I ran back up to school to finish out our ILE program. Back at home we quickly got back to the basics with an egg sandwich for dinner...Now its time to relax for the rest of the weekend.

Last day in the hospital

Today is the last day we were expecting to be in the hospital, shooting to get home before noon. Last night proved to be very similar to the 1st night as we had nurses and residents stopping in at all hours to check in on Kristi and Sydney....leaving us again with very little sleep. The one thing that ended up working out well was the nurse's finally bringing in a pacifier (albeit not until about 4AM). Now I'm sure there is still plenty of debate about whether they should be used or if there are developmental issues with them, but I will tell you this...that thing is magical. Within one second of getting it, Syd calmed down and was able to nap for a good 45 minutes which proved to be our longest stretch for some sleep. That definitely helped as she was a little congested all night and this was the only thing that seemed to calm her down.

We didn't get too much sleep overnight with the feedings and steady stream of doctors and nurses, but did get a few hours, in the wee hours of the morning. Here are some pics of us lounging around the hospital room today. We think both mom and baby will be released before noon tomorrow!!!

Sydney McKenna arrives...

After hours of doing laps around the maternity suite, the real fun began around 5AM when the first real contractions were felt. The real 'labor' itself didn't begin until about noon on Sept 3rd. At 1:16PM, Mom did a great job bringing Sydney McKenna Komelasky into the world. At 7lbs 15 oz, and 20.5 in she was a lot bigger than we were expecting!!!

And So it Begins....

And so it begins....you may remember the titles of such posts from May 2007 over at the trips blog....but they've had their fun in the spotlight (for at least a few days). Let's turn our attention a little further down South to the lovely Durham area.

Considering no one knows about this blog, posting baby updates may not be all that exciting...but I'm guessing soon it will be filled with a lot more interesting things then what is currently occupying my time (i.e. my business school shenanigans).

In any case....it was a typical evening that just happened to be Kristi's official due date. I finished up my first day back at school, a riveting ILE workshop, and came home to do some work on my computer. Yes, that work may have involved two separate Fantasy Football drafts, but that in itself is a lot of work. Kristi was doing what she loves...some scrap booking (of my China pics) and then headed off to the gym. The Gym?? Yes...how the heck a 40 week pregnant woman can still go to the gym is beyond me, but she does love her aqua-moms class and this particular night decided to really press the issue and do some BodyPump. BodyPump? Well for those of you who don't know what that is, it's a class that basically does weight circuit training with dumbbells to music.

After coming home from the gym, Kristi mentioned how she thought her workout caused some tightening in her stomach. I made her a delicious and extra healthy fruit smoothie and a deliscious egg sandwich (the only thing she felt like eating besides Chex)...and she was soon falling asleep to reruns of MSW. Yes, that is Murder She Wrote, and Kristi is Jessica Fletcher's #1 fan. Being the diligent student I am, I stayed up reading over my pre-assignments after midnight. It was getting close to 12:45 as I was wrapping up, and what do you know, I hear Kristi in our bedroom. She woke up and before we knew it, her water had broken.

The funny thing was, was that it wasn't at all as I expected, to be rushed, frantically running around the house. Now yes, we had both packed our bags for the hospital about a month earlier, but we took our good old time, after talking to the doctor on duty....I even had time to shower and shave.

We ended up at the hospital around 2:00, making our way through the emergency room up to the maternity suite. Once the doctors had confirmed that Kristi's water had indeed broken (that took 7 years of medical training?). By the time we made it through there and onto the delivery suite...the day had just really begun. No sleep and it was about 4AM....

The Baby Room is ready....
